Winery group welcomes more expertise

by Rachel Lane/Times-Georgian

With an increased interest in wine in the region, more experts on the subject may help the local industry.

The Vineyard and Winery Association of West Georgia has about 100 members and President Doug Mabry has members who are experts in wine – including a teacher at the Atlanta Wine School. He said others have limited knowledge beyond a simple appreciation for wine.

The group is mainly focused on the growing process, and Mabry himself said he had limited knowledge of how to grow a grape when the move to start the association began about a year ago. Now he helps others learn the process and is studying about forming a winery to produce local wines. Mabry has studied to help educate others on grapes and a variety of berries that can be grown here and used for wines, juices and jellies.

“We’ve been concentrating on the wines we will be growing here,” he said.

Now, the association is considering wine tastings and a statewide symposium, tapping the knowledge that already exists here to educate others who have an interest.
