Newnan Road's Roundabout Construction Underway

The traffic on Newnan Road will soon be forced to slow down, as construction work on the roundabout is in full swing.

The roundabout, set at the intersection with Olympic Drive, is hoped to ease congestion, allowing people in the West Georgia Tech parking lot and visitors to the Carroll County School board office easier ability to get out of the driveways and onto the road.

The project was approved last November by the Carroll County Board of Commissioners. The estimated $612,000 job started about three weeks ago. The majority of the work may continue into September.

On Sept. 25, 18-year-old Malinda Anthony died hours after she was involved in a two-car crash as she was attempting to make a left turn onto Newnan Road from Olympic Drive. Her car was hit broadside by a truck. She was flown to Atlanta Medical Center where she died several hours later.

Anthony’s accident and death came just months after the board had voted down the idea of a roundabout to explore other options.

So far, work has progressed smoothly, said Charles Pope, with the county’s Public Works Department.

At the moment, workers are grating the adjacent property down to street level, removing dirt up to 21- feet deep. Removal should be completed in a few weeks. When they are prepared to start working on the road, Pope said one lane of Newnan will be closed at a time.

Cynthia Clanton, director of the Carroll County College and Career Academy, said she knows traffic will be tight at the intersection where the buses leave the school, but she hopes the end result is worth the trouble.
