UWG Student-Athletes Selected to 2011 Gulf South Conference Spring All-Academic Team

A trio of University of West Georgia student-athletes were honored this week for their achievements in the field and the classroom by being selected to the 2011 Gulf South Conference Spring All-Academic Team.

Sarah Ross of women’s golf and baseball standouts Brett Wright and David Buchanan were all chosen for the distinction, with Ross and Wright being repeat winners of the award, while Buchanan was a unanimous selection to this year’s squad.

Ross, a senior in Psychology from London, Ontario, Canada, posted a 3.43 and closed out her career as one of the most decorated performers in UWG history. She was a first team All-GSC performer for a third straight season this year and was an All-GSC first or second team member in all four years of her career.

Wright, a sophomore in Finance from Waco and former Bremen High School star, recorded a 3.34 in the classroom, while batting .296 with 25 runs scored and 21 stolen bases for the Wolves this past spring.

Buchanan, a senior in Mathematics from LaGrange, posted a 3.52 and was among six unanimous selections to the GSC All-Academic Baseball Team. He hit .307 in 2011 with 29 RBI — second-most on the team.

The honors for Ross, Wright and Buchanan bring West Georgia’s season total to eight student-athletes earning Academic All-GSC status this year. Previously, football’s Juan Pickett, soccer players Tatiana Pedrosa, Miriam Perfecto and Meg Sytsma and men’s basketball player Gavin Field earned the honor.

For the 2010-11 academic year, West Georgia’s athletic programs produced 79 GSC Academic Honor Roll members. This represents the highest total in the history of UWG Athletics.
