School Grants: Creating Opportunities

With $5 million in grants over the past two years, the Carrollton City School System has been able to offer programs, technology and support to students that might otherwise not be available in the current budget environment.

From the addition of the Science Technology, Engineering and Math program to grants for individual classrooms, the Carrollton administrators try to make sure the grants they apply to receive will fit within the framework of the system’s goals and that the grant requirements can be met.

Superintendent Kent Edwards said it would be impossible to imagine the school system without the grant assistance. “So many school systems are trying to catch up (with other systems). We would be in a similar, challenging position,” Edwards said.

Annette Murphy, director of Title I and federal programs, writes many of the grant applications. She said the after-school program is a good example of how grants help the system.

Last summer, the school received a three-year grant to expand the after-school programs. Students can now be offered snacks, transportation home, and low student-to-teacher ratios — about 400 students participate in the program while about 100 people offer tutoring services. Even though it is the first year of the expanded program, of the 100 students at the elementary school, about 75 percent of the at-risk students passed the CRCTs, an increase proving the grant has helped.
