Early last month we featured a story on Dr. Erich Bergiel (left), a professor in the Richards College of Business and a Major in the United States Marine Corps who was recently deployed to Afghanistan. He recently contacted us for an update on what he has been up to since his departure.
After securing a Land Use Agreement, signed by the Minister of Industry and Commerce, the team can now begin construction on a multi-million dollar Distribution Center. The facility will be built in Helmand Province city of Gereshk. The new Distribution Center will include both cold storage facilities for the consolidation and shipment of Helmand fruits and vegetables, and dry storage for non-perishable cargo handling.
It will provide an important link between the farmers of Helmand Province and consumers throughout Afghanistan and into adjacent countries. It will also provide an appropriate location for over-the-road cargo carriers to consolidate smaller loads into full truckloads to move them out of the area more efficiently at lower cost, and to break down full truckloads of merchandise to distribute smaller quantities to local cities and villages.
Bergiel explains that "I basically fell in on the end of this project; it was a great opportunity and experience. Back home I hope everyone is doing well."
