Treatment center for children seeks mentor volunteers

by Winston Jones/Sentinel

Youth Villages-Inner Harbour Campus on Dorsett Shoals Road is seeking volunteers and mentors for children in its treatment program.

Katrina Word, volunteer and mentor coordinator, and Caroline Ledlie, Americorps program director, were guest speakers at the noon Friday meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Douglas County.

Youth Villages-Inner Harbour Campus is located on 1,200 wooded acres and is one of the state’s largest residential treatment programs for emotionally and behaviorally troubled children and youth. The program began in 1962 and merged with Youth Villages in the fall of 2009.

Word said mentoring provides young people with positive adult influences, the power to overcome obstacles and help in making good choices.

She said the mentor process begins with an online application which can be downloaded from the organization’s website, www.youthvillages.org.

“We require four references and we check them out,” she said. “This is followed by a phone interview, so we can get a feel for the person to pair him/her with the proper child.”

  1. This is very encouraging as there are many people who simply need some outside help. Great for the Georgia area. Here's another resource for Georgia Treatment Centers
