UWG student nurses help tornado victims

byRachel Lane/Times-Georgian
Though a month has passed since tornados destroyed parts of Alabama and northern Georgian, people are still volunteering to help with the recovery efforts. A group of 10 the University of West Georgia students spend Sunday lifting, pulling and painting in Ringgold, one of the state’s hardest hit areas.

The trip, organized by the Student Nurses Association, SNA, lasted only a day, but reminded the students to be thankful for what they have.

“Everyone’s forgotten. I’m going to put up photos on Facebook to remind them,” said Sammantha Rhea, a senior, and the secretary of the SNA.

She thought they would spend the day moving rubble from roadways, but most of the roads that are covered are blocked to everyone. Instead the group focused on one house, cleaning the yard and painting it.

“It was the only house on the street that was salvageable,” said Heather Baker, a senior and the president of the SNA.

Shamyria Ortiz, a senior and the director of community service, came up with the idea. In an email she sent to the rest of the group, she said it was about “nursing beyond the bounds of medicine and patient care.”
