Information on Tornado Relief Efforts

Toomers for Tuscaloosa GA Division announces volunteer efforts that are taking place in the Atlanta metro area for the immediate relief of April tornadoes in rural communities of Alabama and Georgia. Toomers for Tuscaloosa GA Division, is a grass roots tornado disaster relief effort and can be found on Facebook:http://www.facebook.com/pages/Toomers-for-Tuscaloosa-GA-Division/142787745794927 ,

Toomer for Tuscaloosa is currently sending out daily caravans to rural Georgia and Alabama towns whose infrastructures have been destroyed. They work closely with law enforcement and other disaster relief agencies in these areas to determine when, where, and what needs those specific communities are searching for. Toomers for Tuscaloosa GA division is currently headquartered out of a donated warehouse space in Peachtree City, Georgia. We have site coordinators both in state and out.

There are now two Atlanta in-town locations accepting donations: Druid Hills Presbyterian Churchlocated at 1026 Ponce de Leon Ave. NE., Atlanta, GA 30306. Accepting donations Monday -Thursday, between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm. Morningside Presbyterian Church located at 1411 N. Morningside Dr. NE., Altanta, GA 30306 Accepting donations Wednesdays through the end of May from 11:30 am - 7:30 pm.

Volunteers are needed to assist in sorting donations and loading trucks in the warehouse in Peachtree Citythis Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8. PTC Combat Fitness is not only donating the warehouse space needed to sort items, but they are also offering a month of free cardio classes for volunteers that come sorting materials to ship off. According to Lani Nichols, “We are feeding 1000s of people everyday as well as feeding displaced pets and farm animals. 100s of people are still living in tents because their homes were destroyed. They are relying on us, their neighbors to help them put their lives back together”.

On Friday, May 6th, the Georgia Force football team will be collecting essential item donations for tornado relief at the Arena at Gwinnett Center from 7:00 a.m. until 8:05 p.m. game time. Those who bring donations before the game will get a voucher for a free ticket to that evening’s game. Additionally, on Sunday, May 15th, The Atlanta Beat, Atlanta’s professional women’s soccer team, will be giving a portion of proceeds to relief efforts.

Toomers for Tuscaloosa is also welcoming school drives for these items, and calling out to local ministries, Boy, and Girl Scout troops. Babies need diapers, there are several members of our community that cannot get to the distribution centers because trees and debris are covering the streets.” Brandi is working with the distribution efforts in Trenton. They are also compassionately giving what they can to their surrounding towns of Higdon, Ider, and Rainsville.

People are reaching out to volunteer and Toomers for Tuscaloosa GA Division is doing what they can to connect everyone in unity. Major needs right now include non-perishable food, baby items (including food, formula, diapers and wipes), clothing, personal hygiene products, blankets, working gloves. GA Division Coordinator, Lani Nichols said, “We are also in desperate need for volunteers to transport these donations to our headquarters in a timely manner so that we can reach our fellow Americans as quickly as possible. We have been inundated with calls for help.”
