Tornado Relief Efforts Continue

As relief efforts in Georgia and Alabama continue after last month's devastating tornadoes, civic groups, elected officials and citizens of affected areas are expressing their gratitude for all that has been done to help them recover.

Civic groups and faith-based organizations have set up pantries, staging areas and headquarters sites to support relief efforts.

The Federation of Southern Cooperatives, Upper Sand Mountain Parish and Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief are among the many groups that are leading recovery efforts, having provided and organized volunteers and collected and delivered supplies.

The groups are now beginning to turn their attention to more long range issues of recovery and developing more permanent housing and community development solutions, said Debra Eatman of the Federation of Southern Cooperatives.

Eatman said the group is still in need of funds, food (non-perishable), toiletries, personal care items, baby food and diapers, cleaning kits, towels, linens, furniture, building materials, generators and other supplies. Volunteers are also needed to help organize supplies as they come in and help to transport them to outlying communities. Volunteers can also help with record keeping and data base management to assure that all funds and supplies are accurately accounted for and fairly distributed to families and communities in need. Those who are interested in assisting the Federation can visit its website: www.federation.coop or contact the group directly at P. O. Box 95; Epes, Alabama 35460; phone: 205/652-9676.

In Georgia, the Federation's Fiscal and Accounting Office is located at 2769 Church Street, East Point, Ga. 30344; phone 404/765-0991; Ralph Paige, Executive Director; Cornelius Blanding, Field Director; Jackie Ward, Executive Assistant.
