The Carroll County College and Career Academy, the only charter school in Carroll County, will not be affected by Monday’s Georgia Supreme Court Ruling.
Dr. Christie Johnson, assistant superintendent of Administrative and Student Services for Carroll County Schools, said the court decision ruled that the Georgia Charter Schools Commission cannot decide to allow a charter school in a school system if the school system’s board of education has already denied the request.
“The College and Career Academy was approved directly by our local board of education and not the GCSC,” Johnson wrote in an email to the Times-Georgian. “The court’s decision centered on schools seeking a charter without asking for local school board approval.”
The College and Career Academy was approved as a charter school in 2008, prior to the establishment of the Georgia Charter Schools Commission, she said.
After denying the creation of a charter school, the organizers would take the request to the GCSC and receive approval. Several school boards across the state brought a joint suit against the GCSC.
The court ruling stated the state does not have the authority to create charter schools.
