The annual Carrollton City Schools kick-off celebration Tuesday gave system employees a couple of extra reasons to celebrate.
The kick-off is designed to get faculty and staff excited about the coming school year, emphasizing the importance of the history of the system and the future. With the new campus theater dedicated to a long-time teacher and the system’s celebration of the 125th anniversary, Tuesday’s staff meeting had extra energy.
The theater in the Mabry Center for the Arts was dedicated in honor of Brenda Sue Holcombe. When the surprise announcement was made by Dr. Kent Edwards, superintendent of Carrollton City Schools, the crowd gasped, then cheered, giving Holcombe a standing ovation.
“My job has been my passion, it’s been my life,” the performing arts teacher said. She fought off tears even before her out-of-state family, including her two grandsons, came from backstage to congratulate her.
