STUDENT ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR AWARDED TO MCS

The University of West Georgia’s Mass Communications Society recently won the Outstanding Student Organization of the Year Award for the Large Organization Category.

MCS is designed to bring together mass communications majors, pre-majors, minors and any interested student and give them the opportunity to put what is learned in the classroom into practice. Participants also have the ability to network with professionals and to gain practical experience in the areas of television/film, radio, journalism and public relations. The society also serves as a bridge between all student media outlets, including UTV-13, The West Georgian and The WOLF Internet Radio.

This year, MCS members took home several prizes for their collaborations during Homecoming. They designed and created the winning banner for the Student Organizations category and were awarded the top prize for decorated vehicles in the parade.

MCS leaders also participated in the 2010 holiday season by helping significantly with Carve on the Quad and Safe Treat. For Christmas, UTV-13 and The WOLF both aired their first holiday special, featuring Santa Claus reading “Twas the Night Before Christmas” to over 30 children in the daycare program in the College of Education. They also aired a Holiday Special on UTV-13 that celebrated Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and other holiday celebrations.

MCS holds an integral part in planning and overseeing the Department of Mass Communications annual Media Day. The event, open to all UWG students, features a panel discussion led by media professionals invited to campus, networking sessions and an honors luncheon.

Recently, MCS organized a field trip to CNN, and they are currently producing the inaugural f-Stop Film Festival, for UWG students and those at schools in the metro-Atlanta area and beyond. The f-Stop Film Festival will showcase filmmakers’ talents, and takes place at the end of the spring semester.
