Two New Endowments Created at UWG

The University of West Georgia Foundation announces the creation of two new endowments by David and Nichole Johnson. The David A. Johnson Applied Econometrics and Analytics Fund and the David A. Johnson Presidential Scholarship Fund will help future UWG students in a variety of ways.

“We are delighted at, and very grateful for, these generous gifts to UWG,” said Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna, president of the university. “They are a wonderful investment in the future of the university, the Richards College of Business, in the lives of students, and ultimately in the businesses who will benefit from their skills.”

The Johnson Applied Econometrics and Analytics Fund will further the study of econometrics and predictive analytics and provide valuable knowledge and experience to students with an interest in this field.

“It is rewarding to hear that alumni like David want to support the development of our students,” said Dr. Faye McIntyre, dean of the Richards College of Business. “This is a testament to the quality of education they received at the University of West Georgia, and Richards College of Business students will benefit tremendously from their generosity.”

Dr. David Boldt, professor and chair of the Department of Economics, mentioned the specific ways the endowment would eventually help UWG’s business students. It “will provide financial resources to the Department of Economics and the Richards College of Business to allow us to begin offering courses in Econometrics and Business Analytics using SAS Statistical Software,” he said. “Funds generated by the endowment will greatly assist the department in its effort to provide our graduates with career-enhancing skills.”

In addition, the Johnson Presidential Scholarship will be awarded annually by the Honors College to assist outstanding students at UWG. The Johnsons are also providing funding to develop econometrics and predictive analytics programming at the Richards College of Business while the endowment builds. The first course, Introduction to Econometrics, will be offered in the spring of 2012.

“The new econometrics and analytics course will give students an opportunity to work with state of the art software and to do cutting-edge business research,” said Dr. William “Joey” Smith, RCOB associate professor. “It will also provide participating students an advantage in obtaining competitive internships and professional positions in a very competitive job market.”

David Johnson is a founder of Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP. The business is a management consulting practice specializing in services to clients in need of sophisticated risk management models, debt collections organizations which require liquidation models and analytics, and portfolio management companies desiring a variety of services. Johnson received his BBA from UWG in 1996, and was also a presidential scholar.
