MeccaFest Art Festival

The MeccaFest Fine Arts and Crafts prides itself as the “most artist-friendly festival in the country,” said Penny Lewis, manager of Carrollton Cultural Arts Center.

Lewis said the amenities the visiting artists enjoy include a Friday night kickoff party, a catered, covered dish dinner on Saturday and personal attention to each artist who comes.

“If an artist shows up with a cold, we take them chicken noodle soup,” Lewis said.

She said the artists are also housed by host families or are given special discounted rates at local hotels.

MeccaFest will be Saturday and Sunday at the Cultural Arts Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Festival admission is free, and there’s lots of free children’s activities and entertainment.

Lewis said the Carrollton event, now in its seventh year, has been successful because it’s a show put on by other artists who do festivals for a living.

“Most festivals are run by administrators,” she said. “We’ve been able to bring the best features of festivals from across the country.”
