Broadway Legends Recognize UWG Theatre Student’s Work

Jared LeClaire, theatre major at the UWG, took home an award during the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Chattanooga recently.

His design for the UWG Theatre production of “Life is a Dream: 10 Minute Plays” was juried by renowned designers Tony Walton and Richard Pilbrow. He won second place in the undergraduate student design competition for his scenic and media design.

The two legends have designed a host of original Broadway productions. Walton designed scenery for “Chicago.” They worked together on “Fiddler on the Roof” and  “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” with Walton doing the lighting and Pilbrow the scenery.

UWG Theatre presents "Tradin' Paint"

Tradin’ Paint by Catherine Bush will run in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts Dangle Theatre from April 11th through the 14^th  at 7:30 and the 14^th  and 15^th  at 2:30. This fast-paced, NASCAR themed, adventure will have you cheering for the races on the track and in life. There will also be a Community Preview April 10^th at 7:30 pm and tickets are $3.  General admission tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and FREE with your UWG student I.D.There’s not a bad seat in the Bristol Motor Speedway, only good and better, so come on out and have a good ol’ time! The show contains adult language. Theatre student awarded at festival

The UWG Theatre Company recently had 17 students participate in the Region IV American College Theatre Festival in Daytona, Fla. Theatre major Jared LeClaire competed in a Scenic Design competition based on his nomination for Meritorious Achievement in a production he designed last year. Thanks to the quality of his work and sophisticated design, LeClaire was honored at the festival with the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas Awards for Excellence in Technology and Design award.

Winners of the award receive a full tuition grant, housing, daily breakfast and lunch as they participate in a one week master class in the area of their choice. SILV classes may include: Computer Drafting, Computer Modeling, Rigging, Automation, Props & SFX, Sound, Makeup & Masks, Wigs, Lighting Technology, Patterning, Projections & Video, and Moving Lights.

LeClaire maintains a 3.75 GPA while designing every semester and is the scene shop foreman. He has studied under Tommy Cox and Brad Darvas of the Theatre Company.

UWG Theatre Company to perform Broke-ology

The UWG Theatre Company will be displaying love, struggle and hope as it performs Broke-ology, written by Nathan Louis Jackson. The play will run Feb. 22-26 in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts Dangle Theatre. Show times are 7:30 pm (Feb. 22-25) and 2:30 pm (Feb. 25-26).

Broke-ology tells the story of a working family in a once vibrant run-down neighborhood Kansas City, Kan. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, the neighborhood is a vital part of African- American life in Kansas City. The ensemble cast includes Erika Ragsdale as Sonia the strong willed mother and wife; Andra Ward Jr. as the warm-hearted father and husband, Terrence Smith as the willful son Ennis; and Aaron Wilson as Malcolm, the son who is determined to make a better life for himself. Many students had a hand in the design process including Jared LeClaire who provides the set design; Monica Mora provides costume designs; props by Katerina Verceles; and sound by Zach DeSutter.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and FREE with your UWG student I.D. Also, a community preview will be performed on Feb. 21 at 7:30 pm with ticket prices at $3. The show contains adult language. For more ticket information, please call (678) 839-4722.
