Archaeology Lab open house

The Department of Anthropology is hosting an open house of the university's Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Archaeological Laboratory. The open house will be Saturday, April 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The lab is located on Plant. Op. Drive, down the street from the Z-6 cafeteria. 

The event is free and open to the public. Those who attend the open house can get their hands dirty by participating in the archaeological dig at the on-site mock excavation pit. Learn to make stone tools with flint knapping demonstrations by Mr. James Spake. Artifact identification will be done by Dr. Thomas Foster. There will also be games and activities, an Atl-Atl throwing demonstration and guided tours of the lab.

UWG's Waring Archaeological Laboratory hosts an Open House

The Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Archaeological Laboratory at the University of West Georgia is hosting an open house on Saturday, April 16, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The public is invited.

The open house will feature: an archaeological dig at the on-site mock excavation pit; a flint knapping demonstration by Mr. James Spake; and artifact identification by Dr. Thomas Foster, the director of the lab.

There will also be games and a guided tour of the facility.

The Waring Lab is located at the University of West Georgia along Plant Op. Drive, behind the Z-6 building and to the right of the track.

The Waring Laboratory is an archaeological research and curation facility organized within the Department of Anthropology at the University of West Georgia.

It is a repository for existing and future archaeological materials generated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Department of Transportation, and other agencies and organizations conducting field research at Georgia archaeological sites. The laboratory is the repository for approximately 5,000 cubic feet of artifacts and records from archaeological sites across Georgia and welcomes professional research use of these collections.
