Come check out Lisdoonvarna playing in the Nook on the main floor of Ingram Library! Free and open to the public! Event starts tonight, April 6, at 6 PM and goes on until 8 PM. 


About Lisdoonvarna:
"We began as a purely Celtic band, doing mostly traditional (and a few contemporary) Celtic songs. Later we decided to broaden our musical palette and added some non-Celtic music to our repertoire, including some soft rock, folk, oldies, and a novelty song or two thrown in for fun. We pretty much play whatever we all like and want to play, so it has become a little difficult to classify our band."

A Workshop to Help the Hungry

While some students busied themselves reading or tapping out assignments on computers in the Ingram Library recently, others grabbed brushes and picked out bowls.

They sat around a table and set about on their mission, to decorate the dishes in an effort to feed the hungry. The glazing workshop was for Empty Bowls of Carroll County. The bowls will be up for sale at an upcoming annual fundraiser. The proceeds will go to the Carroll County Soup Kitchen,

Carol Boyd, director of Empty Bowls of Carroll County, said the fundraising effort started about 20 years ago in the Upper Midwest. From there, the grassroots effort spread internationally.

“I had visited my sister in Texas one year and attended an Empty Bowls event and thought it would be good to bring it to the area,” Byrd said.

UWG students, faculty, staff and community members participated in the workshop.

“The soup kitchen is important to support,” said Angela Pashia, the instructional services outreach librarian. She is responsible for creating events that will foster student involvement.

The Empty Bowls of Carroll County fundraiser will be on Feb. 26 at the Carroll County Agricultural Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will buy a bowl for $10 and enjoy soups from area restaurants. Entertainment will be provided. There will also be raffle prizes, an art auction and a boutique table.
