Harris announces walk-on softball tryout

Carrollton, GA – University of West Georgia softball coach Mandy Harris has announced walk-on tryouts for the 2012-13 season, scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 5, at University Field on the UWG campus.
 
Eligible participants for the walk-on tryout must be 2012 high school graduates who have completed their respective high school season. No player may be permitted to participate without a physical.
 
Participants who played high school softball may provide a copy of your physical from school that was used to participate in your sport during high school. If you did not play high school softball this school year, then you must provide a physical that has been done since December 5^th, 2011 and is signed by a medical doctor (not a nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant).
 
Each player may only attend 2 sessions – 1 fielding & 1 hitting

On the field from 10 – 11am
Hitting from 11am – 12pm

Infield            
Check in at 10:45am
On the field from 11am – 12pm 
Hitting from 12 – 1pm

Outfield          
Check in at 11:45am
On the field from 12 – 1pm
Hitting from 1 – 2pm
 
To be eligible to participate in the tryout, participants must also visit the sports medicine page at www.uwgsports.com and fill out the required waivers under the tryout information tab.
 
Both the physical and waiver must be turned in to the UWG softball coaching staff in the Murphy Athletic Building by 12pm on Friday May 4^th in order to participate. Questions email Coach Thomas at amandat@westga.edu for additional information & waiver form.

Wolves Sweep Albany State

The West Georgia softball team played at home on Monday, April 9 against Albany State in doubleheader action. The Wolves took both games on the day, winning the opener 9-8 and this nightcap by a 9-2 count.

The Wolves now hold an overall record of 13-29 with a conference record of 5-15.

Bellarmine Bombs Down UWG

The ball was flying out of University Field on Tuesday evening — and unfortunately for first-year University of West Georgia softball coach Mandy Harris, it wasn’t doing so when the home team was at the plate.

The Wolves dropped a pair of games against Bellarmine University to open a daunting week, falling in the opener, 3-1, before succumbing in the nightcap, 11-2, behind a combined five Knight home runs in the two games.

In the opener, Bellarmine (12-8) used a two-run dinger from Madi Ratliff to give it the lead for good at 2-1 in the top of the fourth. The visitors from the Bluegrass State tacked on another home run — this one a solo shot courtesy of Lauren Summe — to give Bellarmine hurler Alicia Miller (5-4) some insurance.

West Georgia (5-11) out-hit the Knights, 8-5, in the game, but got its only run on a solo blast from Kristen Sheffield in the bottom of the second.

In the second game, Ratliff struck again to get things going for the Knights, delivering a three-run homer over the left-center fence to put Bellarmine ahead 4-0 in the third.

West Georgia got a run back on a Nicole Yancey solo shot in the bottom of the sixth, but the Knights busted the game open with a seven-run seventh, getting solo home runs from Megan Murdoch and Scarlett Powers for deep balls No. 4 and No. 5 on the day.

Wolves blast Albany State in season opener

The 2012 season kicked off with a bang on Monday afternoon at Lady Rams Park as the UWG softball team won the season opener in grand fashion with a 10-3 stomping of Albany State. In the nightcap, the Wolves continued the hit parade with an 18-3 victory.

New head coach Mandy Harris started her era with a 1-0 record at West Georgia on the back of a familiar face to Wolves' fans in sophomore Nicole Yancey. The Carrollton native belted two home runs, including a sixth-inning grand slam, to lead the UWG offensive in a 10-run outburst.

The UWG scoring started in the first inning, as Yancey led off the game with a double down the right-field line. Senior Jen Culberson moved her over to third on a sacrifice bunt, followed by an RBI single from center fielder Megan Garcia.

The Wolves continued the scoring in the second inning, as freshman Ashley Langleydelivered a two-out single, then promptly stole second base. Yancey then brought home the second run of the season with a single down the left-field line, giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead.

After Albany State plated three runs in the bottom of the second, the Wolves took their turn to break the game open in the top of the third.

UWG's Antoinette Diaz: A Summer Fighting Fires

UWG’s Antoinette Diaz – softball pitcher and math major – spent her summer fighting fires in Arizona. Not just any fire. She was among the firefighters who battled the Wallow Fire, the largest in the state’s history.


“You have to be in a different kind of shape,” Diaz told Amy Farnum, of NCAA.com.

“You have to carry something heavy on your back for long periods of time and be able to hike with it. It’s a lot of pressure on your legs.”

The fire destroyed more than 538,000 acres and although Diaz didn’t encounter it up close, she responded to calls in the local forests.

“It’s a very mentally-demanding job,” Diaz said. “You have to be in physical shape, but once you get to the fire, there is no turning back. You have to stay there and can’t just back out of it.”
